NACCO  Receives

Volunteer Award

Central Kentucky’s top volunteers, including one individual and one company in Madison County, were honored Tuesday at the Central Kentucky Volunteer Awards recognition breakfast, coordinated by United Way of the Bluegrass and sponsored by Keeneland. Formerly the LOVE awards, Central Kentucky Volunteer Awards have honored individuals, groups and organizations in the Bluegrass for 22 years. Hosted by Dave “Kruser” Krusenklaus of WVLK-AM, past volunteer award winner Dia Davidson, WLEX-TV, delivered the keynote address to the packed crowd at Crowne Plaza – The Campbell House.

“It’s uplifting to see so many volunteers who make such a difference every day here in Central Kentucky,” said Kathy Plomin, president of United Way of the Bluegrass. “All of the nominees deserve our congratulations and our thanks.”

Governor Fletcher’s office declared the week National Volunteer Week for the entire state of Kentucky.

Forty-five nominees were recognized in five categories: Individual Service Award, Group Service Award, Youth Service Award, Nonprofit Organization Award and Faith-based Organization Award. An independent panel of judges had the difficult task of choosing the top nominee in each category.

Individual Service Award nominee Dr. Aaron Thompson, a Madison Countian, was recognized for work in promoting the success of children, minorities, young adults, the underserved and underprivileged through volunteer service in many nonprofit agencies including Hope’s Wings, Pattie A. Clay Hospital and YMCA.

Community involvement highlighted during National Volunteer Week

A  special corporate recognition went to NACCO Materials Handling Group, Inc., located in Berea. The company promotes a culture that educates and encourages their employees to be good community members, providing staff time for an annual fundraising campaign, sponsoring an employee food drive, visiting local nonprofit agencies, holding agency fairs and assembling benches for the Berea Senior Citizens Center. NACCO employees often follow their company’s example and find a volunteer niche of their own.

The winner of this year’s Individual Service Award is Leslie Floyd, an individual who combined her passion for people with intellectual disabilities and love of sports into a lifestyle of giving back through Special Olympics. By collectively dedicating more than 7,000 hours annually to Lexington Habitat for Humanity, Amigos was recognized as the winner of the Group Service Award. Ten-year-old Taylor Pace was awarded the Youth Service Award for the teddy bears she makes and sends to children of soldiers serving in Iraq. The Nonprofit Award winner, God’s Pantry Food Bank, had 4,541 volunteers giving 12,867 hours to feed the hungry in 2006. This year’s winner of the Faith-based Organization Award is Maxwell Street Presbyterian Church, who based their volunteer work on recognizing and filling the needs of the community through programs like the Sunday Sandwich Ministry, East Seventh Street Community Center, Faith.
